Shinfield 10k - May 5th

The first really warm day of the year, and lot of personal bests. Have we ever been to a race where two-thirds of our runners got personal bests? (see the note below about this).

Your humble webmaster returned to form with his best time for a few years, closely followed by Simon who recorded a huge 2 minute pb (and a 5k pb en route), and James who recorded a pb too.

First lady home in a huge pb - but by her own admission - in a slightly disappointing time, was Jo Logie who placed 38th overall and 5th lady.

Doug and Dave P both made the top 100, both with pb's - Dave P continuing his steady trot-to-the-top with a massive two-and-a-half minute pb! 10k, and indeed race, debutant Eric Lemann came next with an excellent 45:46 clocking. Eric found getting the right pace difficult (don't we all!) so this solid debut bodes well for the future.

Mel was next, with Sunita not far behind potentially setting a new FV45 10k best.

The last, but by no means least, runner home was Mitch Clark who has returned to club colours after a break of a few years. Welcome back Mitch!

Brief aside: the race start was moved from last year, and the course diverted due to expected roadworks. All the Garmin users whom I spoke to afterwards measured the race at between 9.85 and 9.90km, and a quick measure using Google Earth indicates that the course was in the order of 100m short.

Divided Dash - April 29th

Many thanks to everyone who ran in, erm, difficult conditions. We hope that you enjoyed it, and can forgive us the problems that can arise with this sort of event. If you have ideas on how we can improve the event, please let us know via the link at the top or bottom of this page.

First off, respect and thanks to Alan Gray, Rob Lane and Will McAree who all ran twice, with Alan only 2s slower on his second leg, and Will only 5s down. Their selfless committment allowed their teams to run when members were unable to make it, and certainly made my life easier!

Team 3 (Rhiann Coles, Nneka Okonta and Will McAree running twice) were the fastest team on the night in a sprightly 41:25, Kate Galbraith was the fastest lady on the night in 10:30, and Simon Black was the fastest man in 8:44.

The overall winners once the handicaps were applied were team 6 (James Street, Jonathon Mendelssohn, Charlotte Glazzard, Barbara Mason). The fastest woman by handicap was Nneka, and the fastest man Berkeley Greene.

So how do I work out the handicaps and the results? That would be telling, but you can look at the full, detailed results in this handy Excel spreadsheet.

Bracknell Half Marathon - April 27th

Bracknell is a new town with an old reputation for being a bit of a concrete jungle, so it's always pleasantly surprising to find that its half-marathon is decidely pleasant and green - if hilly! The course takes in lots of cycle paths, a good few underpasses, and many of Bracknell's undulations. Which makes Sian's run even more pleasing, as she gained a new pb!

BA Speedbirds 5k - April 23rd

Congratulations to our ladies, who returned to recapture the individual and team titles at this very pleasant local event. Jo Logie recorded an excellent 18:39 to suggest that her 5k season is likely to be very good indeed.

Flora London Marathon - April 13th

Perfect conditions, with only a short squally shower to spoil things around 2 hours in, led to some brilliant times. Well done to everyone who ran! More details will appear later in the week (once your spectating webmaster has defrosted and dried-out!).

If you have any photos from the day, please bring them to the club or to Charlie's Horse on Monday night so I can copy them to my laptop and add them to the website!

Update: 15th April.

Thanks to Dave Priddy, there's now a breakdown of our runners' performances (Excel spreadsheet).

Connemara Half Marathon - April 6th

"As hilly as Swanage" summarizes the very beautiful course on the West Coast of Ireland. Tom and Elaine might not have picked the course for it's pb potential, but both recorded personal bests anyway, with an excellent 1:39 clocking from Tom, and a stonking 1:40 from Elaine!

Apologies - March 18th

I just noticed that the "sortable tables" weren't working, because once-upon-a-time I'd typed "Sortable" instead of "sortable". Sigh. Anyway, I fixed it, so click on the column heading of a table to sort by that column. If you're lucky, clicking it again will sort in the reverse order, but that might not work in some web browsers.

Bath half marathon - March 16th

I ran the Bath Half at the weekend and was pleased with the time given that it was cold and wet and the race delayed for an hour because someone had forgotten the medical marquee!!!

I wonder if Dave and Scott felt like the giraffe who used to be in the BA ads: where is everybody? Well done to them both for turning up, and having good runs!

Unsurprisingly the men's finished 11th of 13, and the ladies joint last.

LFOTM 5k - February 29th

Keith Rogers nipped out of the office and down the Edgeware road to record an excellent 19:47 for this lunchtime favourite.

Reading Half Marathon - March 2nd

A biting wind in the second half slowed most people. But pb's were still in evidence, as Kathryn and Rob's times show, so let me know if you got one!

Updated in the wee small hours as I missed a few people. Why do races publish their results in such crappy formats? And why do my legs ache so much? Sigh :(

Meon Valley Plod - Feb 17th

Ultra-man (Chris Hunt!) reports:

The Meon Valley Plod is around 20 miles long and mostly off road in the Southdowns near Horndean. The leg-sapping hills and muddy conditions resulted in marathon equaling times but was made up for by the stunning views and superb race organisation from Portsmouth Joggers. Special mention goes to the two stations with mounds of cake and jelly babies.

Overall: Very tough but highly recommended.

Chris ran a very good 3:17:19 for 109th place.

Wokingham Half Marathon - Feb 10th

Perfect conditions and a fast, flat course led to so many pb's that it's difficult to know where to start (Cantley Park, I hear some witty souls say. I'll deal with you later).

Leading the charge home was Simon Black who ran an impressive 1:21:40 despite not feeling great; it's a pity that he wasn't able to do himself full justice after training and racing so well recently. He was closely followed by two of the men who have spent the whole winter improving, Will and Scott. Colin and Neil also made it under 1:30, with Ross and Doug just missing out.

Dave Priddy put in possibly the best performance of the year so far, with a huge pb of 1:31. His recent fitness improvements and dedication to training showed today, and he took full advantage of the great conditions.

First lady home was Lucy who beat two-thirds of the men in the club in recording a very good 1:34:28, although it was some way off her best time. Next was Denisa, who is returning to something like the form that she showed this time last year. Then came Rhian who took 10 minutes off her pb in a single race! If she can continue to improve at this rate, Lucy will get a sore neck from looking over her shoulder! :-)

I've marked the pb's that I know about. I was in the middle of my own long run when I spoke to Simon, so if any of them are wrong, or any of the information above is, please let me know! (link at the top of the page).

Bushy Park Time trial - Jan 26th

A sprightly Saturday morning run around Bushy Park always blows the cobwebs away, although the windy weather put paid to any fast times.

Another pb for Jon - let's hope his achilles holds together and lets him sustain this period of rapid improvement.

Tadley XC - Jan 6th

On a proper cross-country course that was sadly lacking the usual ploughed field, the club had one of it's best results ever with the men's team finishing 3rd! That's not happened since about 1999 at Ruislip, if I remember correctly. The ladies fared a little worse with several of the quicker runners missing, and finished 8th. Overall we finished 4th though, so well done to everyone who ran, both scorers and non-scorers!
